Born in Algeria, he used color chalks at the village school to draw. He was interested in nature, the village of his childhood, the inhabitants and his own family. Away from all cultural influences, Hocine Ziani has built a personality and a way of painting his own. All his life, he worked to perfect his art, assert his style, mixing in his paintings the realism or hyperrealism of the foregrounds to a semi abstraction that occupies the bottom of his composition. He is above all a painter of his native Algeria, and of the particular light which reigns there. He has traced all the aspects, the great scenes of battles that have been commissioned by the government, and that led him to recalculate perspectives, colors and compositions, to avoid at all costs the repetitions he abominates, to the simplest scenes of everyday life. He has tried all genres: portraits, still lifes, landscapes, history painting, fantasias, scenes of Saharan life. Little by little, over the years, Ziani went to more purity and purge, he then cultivated the contrast between foreground and background, making it vanish into a luminous dust like a mirage. His works have acquired strength and evocative power unparalleled.
