Paul AÏZPIRI, of Basque descent, was born in Paris in 1919. At the age of 18, he entered Boulle school where he developed his tactile sense. But in 1936, he turned to painting and joined the School of Fine Arts. He exhibited for the first time in Paris in 1943 and obtained in 1946 the 3rd prize of the Young Painting.
He then undertakes various trips to Marseille and Venice, from where he draws his main sources of inspiration: views of the sea, canals, market scenes, characters of the Comedia dell'Arte. In 1951, he participated in the Venice Biennale and won the national prize.
The 1950s marked the beginning of success in his career as a painter.
